Wattpad Originals (successor to Paid Stories / Creators Program)

Rank #229 · Tier C · Priority score 32/100 · Category: Content & media

Grow a following on Wattpad's free fiction app; selected or successfully pitched writers join Wattpad Originals, where some chapters are paywalled for Coins/Premium+ and writers get an undisclosed revenue share and sometimes an advance.

Realistic expectations

Most people who try this earn around $0–$0 per month in the first year; the high figure of $2,000 is a ceiling for a focused solo operator, not a typical outcome. The chance of receiving at least one real payout within six months is rated 1/10. Expect the first payment after 180–720 d.

How it works

You publish serialized original fiction free on Wattpad and build reads, votes and comments. In October 2023 Wattpad replaced Paid Stories with Wattpad Originals, a freemium model: some chapters stay free, others are unlocked with Coins or a Premium+ subscription. Originals is invite-only by editorial selection, and from September 2024 Wattpad also took pitches, with accepted pitches eligible for up to $5,000 in advances plus an ongoing revenue share. Wattpad has not published the revenue-share percentage. Wattpad Studios/Webtoon Productions may also option rights.

One-time cash $0

Skills serialized genre fiction (romance, fantasy, teen); reader community building; pitch writing

How the money is made (unit economics)

Metric Value
Unit per Wattpad Originals contract (advance)
Typical price per unit (low / median / high) $500 / $2,000 / $5,000
Direct cost per unit $0
Platform fee 0%
Gross margin (median case) 100%
Human hours per unit after automation 150

Wattpad states accepted pitches can receive up to $5,000 in advances plus an unpublished revenue share; low/median are estimates. Hours per unit counts the writing needed to be selected. Wattpad pages could not be fetched (TLS error), so terms are estimated.

Break-even

Metric Value
Monthly fixed cost $0
Units per month to break even 0
Typical months to break even 18
Months to recover startup cash 0

No startup cash or fixed cost, so break-even = first payment received. Selection is editorial and invite/pitch-only; most writers are never contracted, so 18+ months is typical for those who are.

Market conditions (Nov 2026)

Factor Assessment
Demand trend declining
Competition saturated
Effect of AI headwind
Price pressure stable
Chance of real net profit within 12 months (≥ $100/month where the plan can pay that much) 2%
Typical net profit at month 12 (low / median / high) $0 / $0 / $1,000

Paid Stories ended in 2023; only a small number of Originals are selected from millions of writers, usually stories with very large read counts. There is no open monetization, so effort rarely converts to money within a year. Use Wattpad mainly as audience-building for other channels.

Pricing strategy

No pricing control; build read counts with frequent updates and tags, then pitch with traction data.

Path to profit

  1. Month 0: publish opening chapters with strong tags (cost $0)
  2. Month 1-6: update 2-3x/week, grow reads/comments, expected $0
  3. Month 6-12: pitch to Originals if reads are strong; most receive no offer

Business-plan sources:

Payout path

Full cycle (setup → earn → bank account)

  1. Write serial
  2. Publish on Wattpad
  3. Build readership
  4. Get invited
  5. Paywall chapters
  6. Payout

What can be automated

Unavoidable manual steps

Legality & compliance

Writing and selling original text is legal in all reference countries; royalties are taxable.

Risks

Evidence that people get paid

Wattpad says creator opportunities paid authors nearly $10M over five years (TechCrunch, Oct 2023); Originals launched with 1,600+ titles; 2024 pitch call offered advances up to $5,000. Payout terms unverified.
